Student Support Materials
Welcome students! Below are some resources to help you navigate practice, stress, sleep, and much more! Please reach out with any other concerns not addressed here.

How to Structure Practice Time
Do you feel overwhelmed, confused, or anxious due to unclear expectations? Establishing predictable routines and using agendas, checklists, or visual schedules could help you with your practice goals!

Validation
Validation is the act of recognizing and affirming the feelings or perspective of another person or yourself. It’s acknowledging that these thoughts and feelings are true. Self validation invovles recognizing your emotions, effort and worth without relying on external praise or grades.
Label Emotions
Identifying your feelings (e.g., "I feel overwhelmed") helps regulate emotions and reduces panic.
Learn to accept your feelings, even negative ones, without self-judgment. This involves accepting mistakes as part of the learning process rather than failures.
Positive Affirmations
Regularly reminding yourself of personal strengths and worth.
Replacing, "I'm not good enough," with statements like, "I am worthy," or "I am a work in progress," builds a more positive self-concept.
Self Care
Engaging in hobbies and resting validates that a your needs matter.
Journaling, setting personal goals (using tools like mind maps), and celebrating small victories help solidify personal value

Learning to Create Balance
You could be extending yourself, leading to exhaustion and feeling disengaged.
1 / Take Time to Breathe
Follow along breath work:
2 / Be mindful of workload
-
Choosing practice tasks that deepen musical understanding, support skill development, and feel achievable within your schedule
-
Try to recognize your capacities and outside demands
-
Productive learning does not require constant overworking; thoughtful, intentional practice is often more effective than long hours of unfocused repetition.
3 / Set healthy boundaries
-
You do not need to say yes to every opportunity.
-
Create a realistic practice schedule, protecting time for rest and communicating when workloads feel unmanageable.

Feeling Alone?
Feelings of isolation, struggling to connect, or lacking a sense of belonging are often signs of unmet social and emotional needs that can affect wellbeing, confidence, and one’s ability to fully engage in learning and relationships.
Connections can be built through small, intentional steps and reaching out for support is a strength.

Seek community within your musical and personal life—through trusted teachers, peers, ensembles, friends, or supportive adults—rather than carrying struggles in isolation.

Share how you are feeling with someone you trust, participate in collaborative music-making when possible, or find spaces where you feel seen and valued.

How to Get Better Sleep
If you are tired, unfocused, irritable, or disengaged, have you checked in on how much sleep you are getting? Sleep is important because it gives the brain time to recharge, repair our bodies, and helps with learning and the formation of long-term memory.
